We often refer to the church as a “family”. It’s a very inviting and relational term, giving a sense of connectedness and intimacy. Family is a nice word.

But not for all of us… perhaps even most of us. Family in our culture has been undergoing steady erosion. We may have these ideals about what family is and what it looks and feels like, but the reality for many of us is that we don’t actually have a clue what family really is about. I speak to far too many people whose families are far from ideal. In some families, the kids have the rule of the roost, spoilt and selfish, and pretty much getting whatever they want. We fear for what the future looks like when they grow up like that! We have parents who are so busy trying to provide everything for their kids (and themselves) in this materialistic culture, that they don’t realise that their relationships are withering until it’s too late. In some families, the older members are shipped off to retirement homes, hardly to be seen again. It’s almost like they disappear and are dead before their time.It seems to me, when I look around, that family is something we’re not good at.

In fact, we’re often very bad at it.And yet, I really believe that family is important, and it’s a word that the Bible uses to describe God’s people. We’re meant to be family, but not just the messed up sort of family that we see in the world. We’re meant to be the fullest expression of what family means, a place where all the generations come together and serve each other, love each other, support one another. Young and old are treated with respect and dignity, contributing to one another’s lives as we all grow in Jesus.

At Warnbro Church we want to rediscover what family means for us in the fullest sense. We want to use the word “family” not just as a nice, friendly marketing feature, but where our family here at Warnbro Church is an awesome reflection of what God means by “family”. Join us on the journey!
